Sue Connors Dear Windham County Safe Kids, I first heard about your child safety seat check program when my son was an infant throught he New Mom's Group at the Hospita. One of the moms inthe group suggested that we all go to Rescue Inc. to get our kids safety seats checked because she discovered that she had installed her child's car seat "totally wrong". I made an appointment with "Safe Kids", though doubted that I installed my son's car seat wrong because I was renting the seat from the hospital where he was born AND I had watched a video on installing the thing AND a nurse had checked the seat before we left the hospital. But guess what? The seat was not installed correctly! I had failed to pull the seat belt all the way out until it locked and this crucial point went unnoticed when the nurse checked the seat. When my son grew out of his infant seat, I came back for another check. I became very careful about checking my son's seat to make sure it wasn't too wiggly, especially after I movved theseat into another vehicle to travel with friends or family. I also learned the porper positioning of the straps. I know I annoyed people with my obsession with car seat safety and constant monitoring of my son's seat, but it was worth it. Last year on August 25th, my diligence and your good training was put to the test. My son and I were passengers in a car that was involved in a head on collision. I was properly restriained on the passenger's side of a new vehicle with air bags. My son was snug in his car seat in the middle of the back seat. My injuries were life threatening. I broke my back, ruptured my colon and small intestine. My sternum snapped. i lost my left eye and broke many teeth. I also crushed my face which has been reconstructed through several surgeries. Now, a year after the accident, I am doing very well. I am thankful to many people for an excellendt recovery. I am extremely thankful for what I learned from Brian and the gang because I know the properly installed car seat saved my son from serious injury, possibly even death. Following the accidenty my 18 month old baby boy required four stitches in his tongue! He is developing normally and, of course, buckles into his car seat for every ride! Every day our lives feel like a miracle. Thank you! Please use my letter inany way that will help you continue to educate others or to get funding. Keep up the good work,
